Hello Parents and Students!

Next week, we will be conducting NWEA testing in Math, Reading, and Language. This is the first time we will be testing during the winter time, so it will be interesting to see the results. Normally, we test in the fall and the spring and then compare the scores to measure progress. We are adding a third test in the middle of the year to help us monitor student progress even more than before. We will test on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday right after lunch each day. Make sure your child gets a good night's sleep and a healthy breakfast packed with brain food! Thank you!

~Second Quarter Mid-Term Reports were sent home today. Please be on the lookout for these!

~Our "Academic Achievement Plan" is in full swing. We started last week with a class full of students. Each day, there were less and less students staying after school. Our ultimate goal is to have no students staying after school or attending Saturday school. What we are trying to accomplish is instilling good work habits and behavior choices that will help the students be successful in middle school and beyond.
~Thank you for your understanding and support!!

I hope everyone had a restful Thanksgiving break spent with friends and family! Last Tuesday, a letter was sent home informing everyone about our new "Academic Achievement Program". Starting today we will implement this new program that is designed to help students prepare for the transition to middle school. It provides not only negative consequences for bad choices, but also positive consequence for good choices. It is our goal to help the students be successful!!

Hello All!!

It's been a while since I have posted on here, and much has happened in school during this time. We have been hard at work learning various concepts in the core subjects. It has been an adventure in math learning ratios, rates, and proportions. We will finally take the test on these concepts tomorrow!

In Reading we are on chapters 5 & 6 of Stepping on the Cracks, a book by Mary Downing Hahn. It's set during World War II in America. The main characters, Margaret and Elizabeth, both have brothers fighting overseas while they are being harassed by the town bully, Gordy, here at home. So far, the students seem to enjoy reading this book!

In Social Studies we are exploring the Ancient Egypt while learning about four important pharaohs and the monuments they built to honor themselves.

Science is one subject we never have enough time to fully explore, but the limited time we have spent has been investigating Newton's Laws of Motion.

On a behavioral note, some of the students have really been struggling to follow rules and procedures at lunch recess. This is a time of day when the students are outside right before they eat lunch. This is also the time of day when there is the highest student to teacher ratio. It is difficult for the General Duty Aids (GDA) to monitor everything that is happening on the playground at this time, so some students tend to take advantage of this. At this point in the school year all of the students are aware of the expectations the teachers have at this school. They have been talked to by me and many other teachers and there has been little improvement in this area. We have decided to compile a list of the students who are continuing to make these bad choices and keep them inside for lunch recess until we feel they are ready to join their classmates outside. This seems to be our only option until we can come up with a better solution. Any suggestions are welcome. If you have any questions, please ask!

Good Morning!

Thanks to all of the parents who were able to make it to Open House on Tuesday night. It was great to meet all of you and talk about our class!

We will do NWEA testing next week. We will test Monday through Wednesday in the afternoons. As always, make sure students get a good night's rest and a healthy breakfast packed with "brain food".

Thank you for your support!

Welcome Back to School!!

I am looking forward to a great year of learning, fun, and preparation for middle school!

After spending the first week of school getting to know each other and learning procedures and expectations, we are "off and running".

We are now in the process of reviewing some fifth grade concepts in math, as well as, introducing new ones.

We have completed our first novel, Twenty and Ten, and are now creating plays based on the book.

We are practicing the word list from Unit 3 in Spelling. There will be a spelling test most Fridays barring some special circumstances.

In Social Studies, we are studying ancient civilizations and the history of the world's major religions.

We have just started the introduction to the Force and Motion unit in Science which details Sir Isaac Newton's three Laws of Motion.

I am very excited to watch the students grow as learners and citizens this year! Wish them luck!!
